Skunked

Today my wife and I lunched together at the Capital Ale House. I thought I would get a beer since I am craaazy, and there is one particular Oktoberfest I've been wanting to try for a while. As you know Oktoberfest beers are typically available in CocktoberOctober, so my time was running out.

The beer of choice: Spaten Oktoberfestbier.

The Spaten had been recommended to me by beer podcast as a high quality delicious beer. It even rivaled the Brooklyn Oktoberfest! If you can imagine that. So, in the vein of Samuel Adams always being a good choice, I ordered a beer during my lunch break.

Well it was skunked. Only slightly but definitely skunked. Why European beer bottlers insist on exporting beer in green bottles, I have no idea. When beer is exposed to light, including the light in beer cooling cases, it goes bad. Not only does it go bad it -- as the name implies -- tastes and smells like a skunk. The correct terminology for this problem is "light struck," but "skunked" sounds so much cooler.

So I am kind of bummed because I love beer and was excited to try that beer. I mean I still drank it, but I'm just saying.

Well it depends on what kind of beer you like. Personally I like Brown Ale's. If I were feeling crazy I would get some domestic brown ale. Maybe the Dogfish Head India Brown Ale. Be warned that is probably pretty hoppy.

Obviously you can't go wrong with either the Legend's Brown Ale off the tap, or the Brooklyn Brown Ale (tap or bottle).

The Rogue Hazelnut Brown is probably pretty good too.
